We had a lovely time outside today playing in our outdoor area! We wanted to share these fab pictures of the campfire and den that we made in the trees. Hot chocolate and marshmallows all round!
This week we have started teaching phonics. We have learnt 's' and 'a' so far. Your child may have come home and told you about it so please encourage them! For example, they may want to have a go at writing the sound, they may spot it in the environment somewhere or you could encourage them to think of words with the sounds in. The first sound book (s, a, t, p) will be sent home on Friday for you to practise. If you have any questions, please come in and ask. Thank you so much to everyone who came to support the children at our Rosh Hashanah celebration - we really appreciate it. The children certainly looked like they enjoyed the honey cakes and apples! We hope you enjoyed sharing in our learning too.
Please note: If you were unable to make the phonics meeting afterwards, a leaflet will come home in your child's book bag. Any questions about reading or phonics, please ask. Yesterday we started talking about celebrations and the types of things we do at them. For example, we wear special clothes and eat special food. Today we learnt about the Jewish celebration of Rosh Hashannah, the Jewish New Year. People eat lots of honey, including apples dipped in honey. The honey signifies having a sweet new year. Linked to the apples, we made apple crumble this morning and tasted it this afternoon. It was delicious! Well, what a fab week! The children have settled in brilliantly and we are really proud of them all. Lunch times have gone smoothly and the children have been enjoying Mrs King's school dinners. We've all been getting a bit tired as the week's gone on, so have a restful weekend and we'll see you on Monday ready for full days!
Today was Flapjack Day!
Thank you to all those parents who sent 20p in a named envelope if their child wanted to try flapjack at playtime. Remember, Reception can buy flapjack on a Tuesday and Thursday playtime. It is baked by Mrs King, our school cook and sold by Year Six children. Yesterday we had a successful first lunch in the hall. Today the children were even better and have settled really well into the new routines. Mrs King's cakes are going down a treat!
This week we are celebrating e-safety as a school. As it's our first week at Great Wood we are only touching on the subject but it is something that we will revisit during the year. Today we went to our first Reception and Key Stage One assembly and were treated to an e-safety show from Harvey the Magician. The children sat beautifully and had a great time joining in! Well, we all survived our first day at Great Wood!
The children had a happy and enjoyable time this morning , making friends and getting to know the routines. We hope the parents survived the morning too! Please remember if you have any questions or queries, pop in and see us. Please feel free to comment on our blog posts too - it is great to have you involved! |
